Remember that the animal cannot tell the vet much of this information, so it is important that the vet gets all the pertinent information from you, the owner. Some of their questions may seem obscure, but usually are designed to shed light on unusual situations.

Once the vet has organised treatment, make sure you understand the plan and what needs to be done. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, or ask for a certain method to be shown to you. Most vets will be very happy to teach you basic skills and help improve your animal handling abilities.

After the visit, the vet will want to wash their boots and waterproofs and any equipment used. Access to a hose or a bucket of warm water, some soap and a towel will be very gratefully received. The offer of a cup of tea is almost never refused!
